According to Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, he and President Bola Tinubu disagree on philosophical issues of government.
According to reports, El-Rufai stated in an interview with Trust TV that he and Tinubu never had a strong personal relationship and emphasized that his early support for the President was motivated more by principle than by a personal connection.
El-Rufai, a former Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister, emphasized that the conflict with Tinubu was never personal.
He added that these basic philosophical disagreements would have caused him to leave the administration even if he had accepted Tinubu’s offer of ministerial position.
“I never was Tinubu’s friend,” he stated. General Buhari and I never had a personal relationship like that.
“Some Islamic stakeholders from the southwest approached me to encourage the development of a Muslim presidential contender from the southwest.
That was the beginning of the conversations. As Kaduna’s governor and one of the APC’s founders, I was aware that there was an agreement that power would shift back to the south following Buhari’s eight years in office. Tinubu wasn’t the main focus; he was only an unintended beneficiary.
We didn’t discover points of agreement, and we didn’t fall out. Serving the people and achieving outcomes is why I am in government, not to profit myself or install friends.
“As a Nigerian, a Muslim, and a Northerner, the philosophy of this government runs counter to everything I’ve been taught. They arrived in order to control the cake and make money. We are distinct individuals who live in two universes that will never cross.
El-Rufai added that his dedication to maintaining party unity following Tinubu’s victory in the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary was founded on his values.
“It is my principle to support my party’s candidate in every election, regardless of whether I like the candidate or not,” he said.
“I would stop at nothing to make sure he won because he became the party’s nominee.”
