Seriake Dickson, a former governor of Bayelsa State and a member of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, has advocated for a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s electoral system in order to improve accountability and transparency in election administration.
During an appearance on Arise Television that was watched, Dickson, a member of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, stated this on Thursday.

Since candidates are unable to demonstrate what the commission alone controls, the congressman called for election reforms to hold INEC accountable.
The former governor said that ensuring that the Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, bears the burden of evidence in election disputes rather than candidates or political parties is one of the main suggestions being discussed in the current reform of the Electoral Act.
“Instead of being occasions where people murder, maim, or fabricate figures in order to win without the consent of the electorate, elections need to be occasions where we rediscover who we are as a country and celebrate our best qualities.
“INEC must take the burden of proof in electoral matters.” That is its proper and rightful place. He stated that we shouldn’t apply the standard evidentiary rule, which states that the burden of proof rests with the one making the allegation.
