If he had been in the nation, Nasir El-Rufai, a former governor of Kaduna State, has stated that he would have participated in the demonstration against the National Assembly spearheaded by Peter Obi, a former presidential candidate for the Labour Party.
El-Rufai, who made the claim that real-time transmission is crucial to preventing manipulation, criticized the Senate for changing provisions on electronic transmission of election results in the proposed Electoral Act revisions in an interview on Trust TV on Monday.
He claims that the opposition to the change and its delay are politically driven and intended to maintain electoral advantages.
El-Rufai expressed regret that he was unable to come to Nigeria, saying that he would have joined Mr. Peter Obi and other party leaders in demonstrating before the National Assembly to reinstate the mandatory and real-time transmission of polling unit results.
He claimed that implementing real-time electronic transmission would greatly lessen election tampering and increase election legitimacy, and he accused the ruling party of resisting the measure in order to survive.
The former governor added that the Senate had not yet fully embraced the reform, even though the House of Representatives had.
It had stated that hundreds of demonstrators were led by Obi to the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on Monday to protest the Senate’s decision to eliminate the word “real-time” from the Electoral Act Amendment Bill’s provisions on electronic results transmission.
Pro-democracy organizations and members of the Obidient Movement organized the demonstration, which was dubbed “Occupy the National Assembly.” They claimed that the MPs’ action was a planned attempt to undermine electoral transparency in advance of the general elections in 2027.
Through third reading last week, the Senate approved the Electoral Act 2022 (Repeal and Reenactment) Amendment Bill, 2026. However, there was controversy once the term “real-time” was removed from parts pertaining to electronic results transmission. Critics say this move creates opportunities for manipulation after the election.
The Senate later clarified that it did not completely eliminate electronic communication, but demonstrators maintain that doing away with “real-time electronic transmission” leaves gaps that could be taken advantage of.
Chanting solidarity songs and holding signs that read, “Our votes must count,” “No to electoral robbery,” and “Protect democracy now,” protesters marched from the Federal Secretariat to the National Assembly.
The demonstrators were compelled to stage their rally outside the main gate after security personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps cut off entry to the premises.
Speaking to reporters present, Obi emphasized that Nigeria’s democratic advancement was in jeopardy and that free and fair elections continue to be the cornerstone of the country’s progress.
He declared, “We have to put an end to this crime and demonstrate that we are now a country that shines in Africa.”
Legislators were also urged by the former governor of Anambra to ensure that results be transmitted electronically by law.
“There was obvious risk. The risk has been endured by us. We have previously suffered from that. We want no more glitches. We’re done. We want the situation to return to normal. He went on, “No more glitches.”
