Real-time transmission of election results from polling stations was approved by the Senate in the current Electoral Act modification, according to the Senate Minority Caucus.
According to sources, the Senate on Wednesday rejected a proposal to require all election results to be transmitted electronically by the Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC.
Opposition MPs, including Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, and Natasha Akpoti, among others, stated at a news conference on Thursday that the motion was not rejected, emphasizing that the Senate passed results transmission rather than transfer.
“We felt that it is necessary to clarify what happened yesterday to put the record straight,” said Abaribe, speaking to reporters on behalf of the opposition legislators.
“The 2022 Act, which was intended to transfer results, was not passed by the Senate yesterday. We were able to transmit the results.
“I have to be really clear about this. Each of us who has the honor of representing a senatorial district comes here with the confidence of our respective senatorial zones.
“We entered the closed area in order to clean up everything so that we could pass it without any animosity when we returned to plenary.
“I can guarantee that we all agreed on Section 63, which is the electronic transmission of results, during our executive session, the Senate’s electoral committee, and the Senate’s ad hoc committee. Transmit, not transfer, was authorized.
“The 2022 Act is transfer, and we don’t want a law that is so ambiguous or that anyone may misunderstand it.
“We want a clear, succinct, and unambiguous law. It transmits results using electricity.
