As he returns to office following the conclusion of the six-month emergency rule, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has been asked by Okechukwu Osuoha, the PDP’s Deputy National Legal Adviser, to remain faithful to the party.
Fubara’s return to power, Osuoha underlined, must be based on responsibility, unwavering devotion to the PDP, and a fresh dedication to promoting peace and stability in the oil-rich state.
He explained that President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in March was the reason for Fubara’s suspension, and that the governor must now return to his constitutional duties without being granted an extension.
The problem lies in the President’s constitutionally permitted proclamation of emergency. Since there has been no extension and the ban was for six months, he must return to the office.
“He needs to come back and take over as Rivers State’s executive governor,” Osuoha stated.
Osuoha acknowledged the discussions about whether it is lawful to suspend an elected governor while emergency rule is in effect, but he insisted that Fubara’s reinstatement should signal a new stage of progress and reconciliation.
He went on to say, “Every Nigerian expects a cordial relationship between the governor and the House of Assembly, between the legislative and executive arms of Rivers State.”
Additionally, he advised Fubara to patch things up with his political backers, adding, “Let there also be a good relationship between him and his godfather, whoever made it possible for him to secure that position.”
“Since Rivers has suffered greatly, the state must be united and at peace for development to occur.”
Osuoha emphasized the value of party loyalty even more and urged the governor to get involved in PDP activities.
He should actively participate in PDP matters since he is still a member.
“Party is king. The party will help you and support you if you have any issues.
In order for Nigerians to recognize him as a member of the PDP, he suggested, “I want to see him participating fully in the party.”
