In order to prevent Nigeria from being isolated as the rest of Africa progresses, Matthew Hassan Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of the Sokoto Diocese, has strongly urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to hold credible and transparent elections.
Speaking at the 2025 Leadership Annual Conference and Awards in Abuja, which had as its topic “Political Stability and Sustainable Development in Africa in an Increasingly Unstable Global System,” The importance of political responsibility and electoral reform was emphasized by Kukah.
He said, “By God, by whatever means, give us clean and credible elections,” to the audience’s cheers.
The high-level event’s chair, Kukah, characterized Nigeria as essential to the political stability of Africa, stating that the continent could not prosper if its most populous country continued to be in political turmoil.
Without Nigeria, he continued, “a roadmap to make Africa great again cannot proceed.”
The rest of Africa, however, won’t wait for Nigeria. They won’t wait until we make a decision about whether to broadcast the election results by livestream, telecast, videocast, or podcast.
While major nations are readjusting their positions, Kukah cautioned that Africa is still unprepared and underrepresented, highlighting the continent’s strategic importance in the global struggle for resources.
“The boys are talking about critical minerals in Washington,” Kukah remarked.
“The biggest challenge facing America today is how to handle these minerals, which are essential for the development and industrialization of their nation. They are making mining investments, safeguarding their mining firms, and restoring their mining environments.
Although Africa provides many of these sought-after resources, he bemoaned the continent’s lack of representation in international decision-making.
We’re not at the table,” he reported. While the superpowers are examining what appears to be a new Berlin Conference, Africa is once more the primary location on the agenda.
Kukah cautioned that electoral irregularities and internal unrest would only serve to erode Africa’s reputation internationally.
He went on to say, “As other countries continue to expand their dominance, Africa is drowning in its own blood and strengthening its vulnerability.
African nations will not wait for us to give in to bewilderment. We need to do it correctly.
In addition to the procedures of gathering and disseminating results, he encouraged political leaders to make sure that elections represent the desire of the people.
As he noted that growth necessitates integrity, creativity, and shared responsibility, Kukah also used the forum to promote cross-sectoral cooperation in Nigeria’s development.
