Thirteen students from the Federal Unity College (FUC) in Enugu State have been suspended by the federal government for six weeks due to allegations of bullying at the institution.

This was announced in an Abuja statement on Wednesday by Folashade Boriowo, the Ministry of Education’s Director of Press and Public Relations.

The students were suspended by Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa after a video went viral that showed some of the school’s students bullying one another.

The ministry’s steadfast dedication to preserving a secure and comfortable learning environment in all federal schools nationwide was reiterated by Alausa.

“The bullying incident at the FUC, Enugu, raised serious concerns about safety and discipline in the school environment,” he said, citing a recent complaint that was received by the Federal Ministry of Education.

The ministry’s investigations indicate that on November 7, a number of students gang-assailed an SS1 student, who was a day student.

The incident was discovered to include the spread of an unsettling film on social media.

In response, a disciplinary commission was formed by the Federal Ministry of Education to look into the situation.

All 13 of the students implicated have been suspended for six weeks pending the investigative committee’s conclusion, he said, in light of the findings.

Additionally, the minister instructed the School Based Management Committee (SBMC) to work with security authorities to carry out a comprehensive inquiry, including any potential connections to outside organizations.

In addition, he stated that urgent steps had been taken to improve security at the College by enlisting law enforcement officers and examining current safety procedures.
