Eze Chika Nwokedi Denies Role in Chibuike Azubuike ‘Self-Acclaimed Obi of Lagos’ Arrest, Demands Proof

By Naomi Onome

L-R: Eze Chika Nwokedi, Chibuike Azubuike

In a conversation led by Eze Chika Nwokedi, Okpoko 1 of Obodoukwu, regarding a rumour about his involvement in a recent police incident and court case involving Chibuike Azubuike and others, he clarified that his dealings with Azubuike were limited, stemming from a lack of prior acquaintance, and maintained that the accusations against him (Nwokedi) are false.

Eze Chika Nwokedi

Eze Chika Nwokedi, Chairman of Ndi’Eze Igbo Lagos, has denied allegations that he was involved in the arrest of Chibuike Azubuike, a self-proclaimed “Obi of Lagos”. He stated that he only advised Azubuike against unveiling a ₦1.5 billion palace, citing potential tensions between Igbo and Yoruba communities in Lagos.

Chibuike Azubuike

Azubuike was arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly parading himself as the “Obi of Lagos” and planning to unveil a ₦1.5 billion palace. The police described his actions as an unlawful attempt to exploit revered cultural institutions for selfish gain.

Nwokedi’s denial comes after Azubuike accused him of orchestrating his arrest and urged Azubuike to come out and show evidence of his involvement, saying, “If I had known I would be falsely accused, I wouldn’t have made efforts to see to his release.”

According to Nwokedi, he only advised against sharing the invitation while foreseeing potential issues that could happen due to Azubuike’s ambition. Azubuike’s arrest alongside others was orchestrated by the supreme leaders of the Yoruba indigenous communities in Lagos, as earlier speculated, he said.

However, Nwokedi stated that his opposition to the ₦1.5 billion palace project was not intended to discourage Azubuike’s ambition but rather to advise him on respecting cultural and geographical boundaries, given his (Eze Chika’s) extensive experience living in Lagos.

He recounted events where he attempted to assist Azubuike after the latter was invited by the police, ultimately making an effort for his release. Despite efforts and multiple court appearances, Nwokedi was bewildered when allegations arose suggesting he had orchestrated Azubuike’s arrest, insisting he had no part in it.

He urged for transparency and proof from those making such claims, emphasising that he had consistently sought to mediate the situation.

Eze Chika Nwokedi has given an ultimatum of 14 days with proof he orchestrated Azubuike’s arrest; otherwise, he will approach the court of law to sue for false allegations and defamation.

Throughout the discourse, Nwokedi maintained that such discussions were harmful to the Igbo community in Yoruba land, as he advocates for careful consideration of the situation to mitigate future conflicts.
