Former presidential candidate Obi Ezekwesili has called on Nigerian senators to stop harassing Kogi Central legislator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan in any way.
Two weeks ago, Natasha was said to have returned to the Senate following a six-month suspension.
Ezekwesili said in a message to the Nigerian Senate and its 107 senators that the lawmaker had come to represent the strength and tenacity required to combat injustice committed against citizens by those who misuse their position of authority.
As she made demands to the Senate members, she claimed that the troubled politician had been unjustly suspended.
“It’s time for your leadership and members to do the right thing—end all forms of harassment or targeting against her,” she wrote in a statement via 𝕏.
“All rational Nigerians believe that Senator Natasha’s suspension was unfair and went well beyond what was considered appropriate sanctions.
The idea that the Senate could intimidate or suppress a woman who speaks out and stands up for what she believes in was misunderstood.
“The Senate will have an opportunity to rectify that error and demonstrate to the public that it can maintain equity and respect for all elected officials with Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s return.
“Cease all acts of violence and silent punishment. No more attempts should be made to discredit, irritate, or degrade her for merely carrying out her duties.
“Restore her senatorial rights and privileges in full.” She must therefore have access to her office, personnel, committee responsibilities, and the freedom to speak in the chamber in order to perform her duties effectively.
Set a more positive example. The Senate needs to demonstrate that it is capable of managing any issues affecting specific members in a responsible manner and refraining from using its authority to unfairly punish those who have been wronged.
Honor the mandate of the people. The Kogi Central populace is represented by Senator Natasha. Any such attacks on her would be disrespectful to her voters’ wishes.
As I’ve insisted since the beginning of this story, this is about more than just Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan,” she continued.
It concerns the type of democracy Nigeria aspires to establish—one in which women can hold important positions without worrying about prejudice or harassment, and in which no one faces consequences for speaking up.

For many of her coworkers, there is a fresh opportunity to take advantage of this second opportunity and at last be heard when they declare that “the injustice shall not be sustained.”
Nigerians are keeping an eye on things, and history will recall whether the Senate opted for justice or retaliation.
