Esther Okoronkwo was chosen as the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Super Falcons’ Fans’ Player of the Tournament.
The team’s official đť•Ź Twitter made the announcement on Tuesday, firmly endorsing Esther Okoronkwo’s pivotal part in Nigeria’s championship run in Morocco.

The 28-year-old forward’s performance throughout the high-stakes knockout stages was particularly noteworthy. She scored a goal and provided two assists in Nigeria’s 5-0 thumping of Zambia in the quarterfinals. The final, however, cemented his place in WAFCON history.
In the 60th minute, Esther Okoronkwo, who was behind hosts Morocco in Rabat, stood up and calmly converted a penalty that was soaked in pressure.

Ten minutes later, Okoronkwo’s deft assist to Folashade Ijamilusi brought Nigeria back to level at 2-2. Then, in the final moments of the contest, she hit a beautiful free kick that reached Jennifer Echegini, who scored the game-winning goal in the 88th minute.
Because of her heroics, she was named the final’s Player of the Match and became a fan favorite.
Not surprisingly, Okoronkwo won a social media poll on Monday, defeating a shortlist of five teammates, including Ashleigh Plumptre, Rasheedat Ajibade, Chinwendu Ihezuo, Ijamilusi, and Echegini.
Although all six were instrumental in Nigeria’s undefeated season under coach Justine Madugu, Okoronkwo’s clutch goal at crucial times was what finally captured the hearts of supporters.
The praise she received didn’t end there. Along with three other notable Nigerians, Okoronkwo was also included in the CAF Team of the Tournament: captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who was voted the tournament’s official Best Player, right-back Michelle Alozie, and goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.
