Human rights advocate and attorney Dele Farotimi has criticized the portrayal of former military leader Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd.), also known as IBB, as a statesman, arguing that such praises merely serve to justify the “evils” he said were committed against Nigerians under Babangida’s rule.
Using his verified 𝕏 account, Farotimi made a brief remark on Tuesday accusing Nigerians of using what he called mutual affirmation tactics to cleanse leaders with a dubious past.
By failing to expose these vile cretins for what they are, the atrocities they have inflicted on the populace are becoming more accepted. What has kept the evil going is this mutual affirmation tactic. You should quit deceiving yourselves, since IBB is not a statesman,” he added.
The Debate-Starting Birthday Tribute to Adesina
According to reports, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, the former president of the African Development Bank, praised Babangida as one of Nigeria’s “foremost elder-statesmen” in a birthday message, just before Farotimi made his remarks.
In his ode to the former military leader, Adesina wished him well on his 84th birthday and commended his “patriotic fervour, devotion and commitment to Nigeria’s peace, unity and progress.”
Adesina wrote: “I extend my congratulations to H.E. General Ibrahim Babangida, GCFR, the former Head of State of Nigeria, on his 84th birthday. You are one of Nigeria’s most important elder statesmen, and your passion for your country, your unwavering devotion, and your unwavering dedication to its peace, unity, and advancement continue to inspire the country. Your entire life is defined by resilience and unwavering service. And Babangida’s Contentious Legacy
IBB was Nigeria’s leader from 1985 to 1993 and is still regarded as one of the most controversial figures in the nation, according to Naija News.
During his rule, the June 12, 1993, presidential election that was generally believed to have been won by Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola (MKO Abiola) was annulled.
Critics contend that his actions made corruption worse, increased poverty, and exacerbated Nigeria’s sociopolitical difficulties, while admirers frequently characterize him as a practical leader who implemented economic changes like the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP).
Nonetheless, Farotimi’s scathing remark has rekindled the argument on whether Nigerians should view Babangida as a leader whose deeds left the country permanently scarred or as an elder statesman worthy of national honor.
