Human rights advocate and attorney Dele Farotimi has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s address and red carpet reception in Benue State.
According to reports, suspected herdsmen have been attacking Benue, a food-producing state in Nigeria’s North-Central zone, frequently for a while.
At least 160 residents were verified deceased in a series of attacks by suspected herdsmen who wrecked havoc in several villages throughout the state in a two-month period, indicating that the killings in recent weeks had been ongoing.
Over 3,000 people were displaced and numerous residents of the state’s Yelewata district were killed in a nocturnal attack by suspected herdsmen last Friday. Although the government said that 59 people had died, civil rights organizations asserted that over 200 people had actually died.
On Wednesday, President Bola Tinubu visited Benue and urged the service chiefs to stop the bloodletting in the state and apprehend the offenders following a flurry of criticism from opposition arrowheads.
During an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Thursday, Farotimi said that President Tinubu should have avoided visiting Benue State rather than going there and showing no empathy for the state’s suffering.
He said Tinubu’s address lacked regret and sounded as like he was getting ready for a campaign rally.
Farotimi claimed that during Tinubu’s visit to Makurdi, the capital of Benue State, on Wednesday, only Tor Tiv V James Ayatse made any noteworthy remarks. He characterized the attacks as a well-thought-out, full-scale genocidal invasion and land-grabbing campaign by bandits and herder terrorists.

In a nutshell, he stated, “It would have been better if the president hadn’t gone.
“Only the words of the Tor Tiv, who spoke extensively about the reality of the situation in the Benue trough and spoke eloquently about the pains of the victims, were worthy of anyone’s time.”
