A crucial project spearheaded by the Federal Ministry of Health to promote long-term changes in Nigeria’s healthcare system, the hiring of 774 National Health Fellows has been approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
On Thursday, at the program’s opening at the State House in Abuja, President Tinubu declared the fellows’ employment. The Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, as well as other traditional chiefs and senior government officials attended the ceremony together with Nigeria’s development partners.
These fellows, who were chosen from each local council, were hired on the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare Professor Ali Pate’s advice. Professor Pate praised them for being chosen as the top candidate out of 360,000, highlighting the process’s merit-based selection criteria.
The fellows and other attendees erupted in cheers at the President’s unexpected gesture.
President Tinubu emphasized the importance of the audacious plan and the stringent selection procedure.
“This program is a game-changing endeavor that demonstrates my administration’s dedication to maximizing the enormous potential of Nigeria’s most valuable resource—its youth.” We have one of the most vibrant, resourceful, and dynamic youth populations in the world, with more than 60% of Nigerians under 30. President Tinubu said, “This has unmatched potential to spur innovation, economic growth, and social change.
According to President Tinubu, the National Health Fellows program is one of the resources his administration offers to enable young Nigerians to succeed and make contributions to the country’s growth.
The fellows, who were pioneers in the health service program, were urged by the president to seize the chances and see themselves as the future leaders of Nigeria’s healthcare system.

In order to promote significant, long-lasting change and innovation in Nigeria’s healthcare industry, President Tinubu emphasized the program’s goal of developing a pipeline of health leaders.

A strong healthcare system is necessary for sustained development, while an unsustainable health program presents risks. Professor Mohammed Ali Pate, the Coordination Minister of Health and Social Welfare, said he was excited about the project and the important part the 774 fellows will play in transforming Nigeria’s healthcare area.
The social campaign to enhance Nigerians’ health has started, and we are already seeing excellent outcomes, he said.
Youth Minister Ayodele Olawande, Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Wale Edun, and the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, provided the companions with motivational speeches.
