Thirteen miners lost their lives in a mine pit collapse in Kadauri village, Maru Local Government Area, Zamfara State, according to confirmation from the Federal Government.
At least 15 itinerant miners were trapped in the incident, which happened after a lot of rain, and as of this writing, just two bodies had been found.
According to the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, federal mine personnel have been sent to Zamfara to oversee continuing rescue efforts with state representatives.
In a statement sent by his media assistant, Segun Tomori, Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dr. Dele Alake called the tragedy preventable and regrettable and emphasized that the site will be closed until recovery work is complete.
“I was shocked to learn of the tragic event in Zamfara that has regrettably claimed some lives. The site will be sealed off once our first responders have been mobilized to it and are collaborating with state government officials on rescue efforts,” he stated.
Despite the concerns to the environment and public safety, preliminary investigations showed that illicit miners were using crude tools to exploit the collapsed site, which was known for loose sandy soil and gold traces.
Dr. Alake noted that in order to combat illicit mining, the Federal Government established the Mining Marshals, which resulted to the closure of 98 unlawful sites nationwide and the arrest of over 300 people.
Plans to grow their activities with additional staff and logistical assistance are in the works, he revealed.
The ministry has started installing satellite surveillance equipment to allow real-time monitoring of mining operations across the country in an effort to further improve oversight.
The minister reaffirmed the government’s zero-tolerance policy against illicit mining while expecting a thorough investigation into the Zamfara catastrophe.
“Until the evil acts of illegal miners are eradicated from this nation, we will not give up. We want to significantly lower mine collapses nationwide and tighten the noose around those who support illicit mining, which is why we are implementing satellite surveillance and other enforcement measures,” Alake stated.
