A official investigation into claims that crossdresser Bobrisky was given preferential treatment while incarcerated for six months for stealing naira banknotes has been launched by the Nigerian government.
According to media allegations and public concerns, Bobrisky was allegedly treated differently from other prisoners when he was being held at the Kirikiri Maximum Custodial Centre in Lagos. As a result, Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo ordered the investigation.
Examining claims of corruption, power abuse, torture, and cruel treatment within the Nigerian Correctional Service, an independent investigating panel appointed by the minister got underway on Monday.
In order to ascertain if Bobrisky served his entire sentence and whether his stated privileges violated prison rules, the investigation will examine the specifics of his case.
The panel’s role also entails investigating human rights abuses, looking into more general problems in correctional facilities, and suggesting changes to enhance prisoners’ rehabilitation and reintegration.

Due to unhygienic conditions, Magdalene Ajani, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Interior and panel chair, has already ordered the removal of prisoners from the Abeokuta correctional institution and asked for information on other detention facilities.
Several officers at Kirikiri were suspended in September 2024 after it was alleged that Bobrisky remained in a private prison apartment and that officials accepted bribes on his behalf. This is when the issue began.
After being taken into custody in April of 2024, Bobrisky entered a guilty plea to four charges of currency misuse and was soon sentenced.
Within two weeks, it is anticipated that the panel will submit its conclusions about the Bobrisky case.
