Five years after Nigeria returned to civilian rule, security officials discovered a plot to topple the government of then-President Olusegun Obasanjo in April 2004, putting the country’s democracy to the ultimate test.
It was discovered that the scheme involved around thirty mid-level military officers.
Remi Oyo, the president’s spokesperson at the time, stated that “serious breaches of security” had been discovered, sparking an extensive investigation that resulted in multiple arrests.
“Let me state that President Olusegun Obasanjo has faith in government personnel and security agencies. He has faith in the people of Nigeria. He is aware that Nigerians will keep working for and with democracy because they believe in it. In a statement, Oyo said, “What the intelligence community is doing is nothing extraordinary; it’s all part of its job.”
After four military officers and one citizen were charged with treason for allegedly planning to kill Obasanjo by shooting down his helicopter with a missile, the government publicly acknowledged the coup attempt by October 2004.
Lt. Col. Mohammed Umar Adeka, Navy Commander Yakubu Kudambo, Lt. Tijani Abdallah, civilian Onwuchekwa Okorie, and Hamza Al-Mustapha, a major and former head of security for the late dictator Sani Abacha, were among those arraigned.
The charge sheet states that between November 2002 and March 2004, Al-Mustapha gave Abdallah money through Okorie “for the purpose of purchasing a Stinger surface-to-air missile to be used in shooting down the President’s helicopter with the President on board.”
In an effort to obtain the US-made shoulder-fired missile, Abdallah reportedly traveled to Togo and Côte d’Ivoire multiple times.
Kudambo, for his part, was charged with writing a draft coup address declaring the overthrow of Obasanjo’s elected administration and the establishment of a new one.
Kudambo and Abdallah were accused in absentia, while Al-Mustapha, Adeka, and Okorie entered not guilty pleas in court.
Remember that Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day parade, which was supposed to take place on October 1, was canceled by the Federal Government last month. According to reports, the decision was connected to yet another purported coup attempt.
However, the Defense Headquarters brushed off the rumors, emphasizing that the cancellation was simply administrative and had “no connection whatsoever” with coup rumors.
