The Flying Eagles of Nigeria defeated Egypt’s Young Pharaohs 2-1 in a close game on Tuesday at the Cairo International Stadium.
The game was an essential component of both teams’ training for the 2025 Africa Under-20 Cup of Nations.
The Flying Eagles got off to a good start in the match thanks to an early impact from attacker Kparobo Arierhi.
In the tenth minute, he scored the first goal after grabbing a perfectly weighted ball from Bidemi Amole. His placement and talent were remarkable.
Arierhi’s goal gave the game a lively tempo and demonstrated the Flying Eagles’ confidence after their recent victory in the WAFU B title.
Nonetheless, the Young Pharaohs reacted resolutely. Taking advantage of a defensive lapse by Nigeria, Ahmed Kaabaka equalized in the 65th minute.
The suspense increased as the game got closer to the end. In the 83rd minute, Nigeria took the lead again after Divine Oliseh was fouled in the box and Precious Benjamin was given a penalty.

Benjamin restored Nigeria’s lead to the joy of both their coaching staff and supporters by completing the spot-kick with accuracy and displaying poise under duress.
Nigeria, a team that has won the Africa Under-20 championship seven times, will be encouraged by this victory, which also comes at a crucial moment as the team is traveling to Cairo less than 48 hours prior to the game. With this victory, the Flying Eagles turn their attention to the forthcoming tournament, which begins on Sunday.
Next Thursday, Nigeria will play Tunisia to start their Group B campaign. They will next face Morocco and Kenya, two difficult opponents.
In the meantime, Egypt, the hosts and group A competitors, will play South Africa to begin the tournament before playing Sierra Leone, Zambia, and Tanzania in an attempt to win at home.
