FOMWAN urges President Tinubu to address Nigeria’s rising food prices, insecurity
The Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) has called on President Bola Tinubu to address the escalating food prices and insecurity affecting the country.
The appeal was made in a communique released following FOMWAN’s 39th Annual National Conference in Akure, Ondo State, signed by National President Hajiya Ra’afiah Sanni and Public Relations Officer Hajiya Maimuna Momodu.
The communique expressed deep concern about the high cost of food, goods, and services, highlighting that women bear a significant burden from these issues.
It noted, “The Conference is worried about the high cost of food, goods, and services in the country and is concerned that women carry the bulk of the problems.”
Additionally, FOMWAN voiced alarm over the increasing insecurity in the country, stating, “FOMWAN notes with great concern the rising pace of insecurity in the country.”
The group attributed these challenges to a deviation from divine guidance, citing religious teachings: “These challenges are as a result of our deviation from Allah’s injunction that when a community engages in corruption, Allah has promised that it would be visited with famine and insecurity.”

To address these issues, FOMWAN recommended several measures, including the promotion of both Islamic and Western education, skill acquisition programs to improve women’s employment prospects, and self-sustaining activities to enhance family economic security.
The communique urged, “The problematic situations could be prevented or remedied by adopting a number of measures including the acquisition of optimum education, both Islamic and Western, skill acquisition in order to increase women’s chances of getting paid appointments as well as self-sustaining activities that can facilitate their family economic security.”
The organization also advocated for greater female political education and participation to improve access to development and funding. It called for collaboration with various levels of government and NGOs to boost agricultural and employment opportunities for women and girls, and to establish safe spaces for them.
The communique added, “Women should key into female political education and participation to increase female access to development, funding for investment, and other facilities for their family economic well-being.”
FOMWAN emphasized the need for a safer environment for women to enhance their well-being and urged the enforcement of laws against criminals to address the root causes of insecurity.
The statement concluded, “FOMWAN affirms the need to ensure that women have a safe environment to carry out their activities which impact on their wellbeing.”
