Amaechi is criticized by Sowore for his one-month anti-corruption pledge.
Politician and human rights advocate Omoyele Sowore has criticized former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi for his recent assertion that, if elected president, he could eradicate corruption in Nigeria in just one month.
During a conversation on X Space, Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State and former speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, made the assertion. He maintained that his leadership style and political determination would be enough to quickly eradicate corruption.
But Sowore rejected the remark as hypocritical and impossible, citing Amaechi’s lengthy political experience as proof that his pledge was untrustworthy. In a video that was uploaded to SaharaReporters, Sowore charged Amaechi with political deceit, saying:
In a month, Amaechi promised to eradicate corruption. Amaechi has served 16 years, 8 years as Speaker and 8 years as Governor. He spent eight of his twenty-four years as Minister. What would you say if 24 were subtracted from 60? At forty, a fool is a fool forever.
After decades in positions of considerable authority, Sowore contended, Amaechi had plenty of chance to fight corruption but fell short. Such last-minute campaign pledges, he said, were a betrayal of Nigerians’ intelligence.
The ex-candidate for president also emphasized the importance of being vigilant and exercising critical thinking, warning young Nigerians not to believe everything they hear in politics. Nigeria’s political system has continuously re-elected politicians who contributed to the issue rather than solving it, he underlined.

“Everyone is lying to you. Yes, we have options and we’ll take part, but we’re not restricted to just one since we don’t have enough time,” Sowore stated.
Additionally, he bemoaned the shrinking window of opportunity for young people to lead the nation’s future and urged them to take advantage of it. Sowore observed that the severe socioeconomic conditions in Nigeria were clearly affecting young people and causing them to age too soon.
“Time is of the essence. Even while you may be young now, you won’t be for long. When I encounter some young Nigerians, I’m 54, and they tell me they’re 24. I question, are we the same age? They don’t look their age anymore because of the system,” he continued.
Sowore’s comments have generated new internet discussion, with many Nigerians now doubting the legitimacy of political pledges made by long-serving public servants.
