A former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau has called on the Bola Tinubu-led administration to reassess its economic policies and acknowledge mistakes made since taking office.
He made this call in an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, on Friday night.
Shekarau’s comments come as Nigeria grapples with the fallout of the subsidy removal policy and naira floatation, which have led to a sharp decline in the value of the naira causing economic hardships across the country, and sparking widespread protests.

The former governor emphasized the importance of self-reflection, stating, “The best learning is when you learn through your mistakes.” He urged the government to identify areas of error, including policy missteps and misguided pronouncements, contributing to the current economic crisis.
Since President Tinubu’s inauguration in May 2023, the price of petrol has tripled, driving inflation figures up. The National Bureau of Statistics reported a 34% inflation rate in June 2024, making essential items unaffordable for millions.
Shekarau stressed the need for the government to admit to its mistakes, saying, “This is the time to sit back and address them.” His comments echo growing concerns among Nigerians about the government’s handling of the economy.
