The Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos State, has sentenced four Filipino women to prison in connection with accusations of cyberterrorism and online fraud.
After being charged by the Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the foreigners were sentenced.
Justice Yellim Bogoro found the defendants, Reyna Mae Eriba, Chynna Samonte, Zara Fabian, and Dominique Medina, guilty on Friday, June 13, along with seven other Nigerians.
Oghomienor Jotham, David Okezie, Gbenga Shittu Solomon, Ibraheem Olamilekan, Favour Oluchukwu, Egwenum Ifeanyi, and Chidera Ezechukwu are among the Nigerian prisoners.
Accused of recruiting young Nigerians for identity theft and impersonation, Somonte was arraigned before the court on separate allegations. In order to accomplish this, computer systems nationwide were accessed in violation of Section 2(3)(d) of the Terrorism (Prevention, Prohibition) Act, 2022 and Section 18 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015 (as revised in 2024).
The judge convicted Eriba, Samonte, Fabian, and Medina of all the allegations brought against them by the EFCC and sentenced them to one year in prison or a N1,000,000.00 fine each.
Additionally, the court mandated that the Nigerian Immigration Service remove the foreigners right away.
It was also mandated that all recovered devices and criminal proceeds be turned over to the Nigerian government.
