According to recent data issued by the Federal Road Safety Corps, or FRSC, between January and September 2025, over 3,400 persons died in various traffic incidents around Nigeria.
During the same nine months, 6,858 crashes were reported nationwide, resulting in 22,162 people suffering varying degrees of injuries.
At a press meeting on Monday in Abuja to formally launch the 2025 Ember Months Public Enlightenment and Sensitization Campaign, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed revealed these numbers.
Of 6,858 recorded traffic accidents between January and September of 2025, 3,433 people were killed and 22,162 were injured.
According to the data, the main reasons for the collisions were driver exhaustion, passenger overloading, transporting people in haulage vehicles, and transporting fuel in plastic containers.
It appears that a key factor in determining roadway safety is driver behavior. The end-of-year campaign in 2025 is anticipated to raise the necessary awareness and sensitization to encourage drivers to take safety more seriously,” he said.
The main goal of this year’s awareness campaign, “Take Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving,” is to address the spike in traffic accidents that usually occurs between December 15 and January 15.
Mohammed claims that the Corps is stepping up its lobbying and public engagement efforts to promote responsible driving, which is still a major contributing factor in the majority of traffic accidents.
The FRSC unveiled a series of proactive measures to address these enduring issues, such as stationing more staff and Special Marshals on busy highways and accident-prone routes, providing free vehicle safety inspections, hosting rallies at large motor parks, and holding town hall meetings to involve transportation stakeholders.
“These actions are intended to increase awareness against careless driving, which is typically connected to the ember months, in addition to our regular enforcement activities.
Additionally, it is anticipated that the implementation of these measures will lead to a considerable decrease in the percentage of road crashes that occur as well as in the number of fatalities and injuries caused by these crashes,” Mohammed stated.
The Corps Marshal noted that the FRSC has improved various facets of road safety management in addition to enforcement.
He mentioned the reactivation of mobile courts and highway checks to address infractions like overloading and speeding, as well as improved driver education initiatives through collaborations with fleet operators and authorized driving schools.
Mohammed went on to highlight the FRSC Annual Lecture Series’ resuscitation, which aims to advance national dialogue on road safety as a critical public health concern. He claims that “critical perspectives on global best practices” are still provided on the site.
He continued by saying that the International Conference on Road Crash Victims in Africa, which is set for November 16–18, 2025, is almost ready.
In keeping with the fifth pillar of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety, the event, which is being organized in partnership with the KRSD Road Safety Foundation, intends to improve victim care and post-crash response.
He formally opened the 2025 Ember Months Campaign by saying, “I urge all Nigerians to continue to support the Corps as we strive to create a safer motoring environment for our dear nation.”
