Similayi Fubara, the governor of Rivers State, is not an Ijaw man, according to Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Wike reportedly mentioned this when speaking to Kalabari locals during a reception held in his honor on Saturday.
at reference to Fubara, Wike had stated at a media appearance in Abuja on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, that an Ijaw man would not have been elected governor of Rivers State without his backing.
But in a Saturday speech to the Kalabaris, Wike made it clear that Fubara is not Ijaw and that people shouldn’t be misled.

“Let no one fool you into believing that the governor is Ijaw; he is not,” he stated. You’re all Ijaw; are you getting any advantages? Interest is politics.
“We have to stand up and say that people shouldn’t act in such a way, treat others poorly, and then abandon them and claim that it’s politics.” Politics must end.
Uwemedimo Nwoko, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and former Attorney-General of Akwa Ibom State, has spoken on the current political unrest in Rivers State, saying that Governor Siminalayi Fubara is forced to follow the Supreme Court’s ruling on the matter.
In an interview with Vanguard on Friday, Nwoko said that President Bola Tinubu’s order for PANDEF leaders to counsel Fubara on compliance was superfluous, claiming that the governor had never expressed any desire to defy the court’s decision.
Since Fubara is powerless, I don’t think it’s necessary to advise him to follow the Supreme Court’s ruling. However, the President is speaking as the nation’s father when he makes this recommendation, demonstrating his concern in upholding the rule of law, Nwoko said.
