Nigerians still do not fully understand the advantages of togetherness, according to former President Goodluck Jonathan, even after a century of merging.
According to Jonathan, Nigerians’ preference for loyalty to their ethnic nationalities over to the country is impeding development.
Speaking at a conference in Effurun, Delta State, Jonathan stated: “If we want to escape this morass, we have to start considering the entire nation as our people.
Nigeria is not the only nation with a diverse population, but it is still a place where people do not yet consider themselves to be part of a single nation. As long as this continues, real progress will be hard to come by.
Nigerians ought to have realized the advantages of unity after more than a century of merging, particularly considering our geographic location and biological diversity.

But we haven’t been able to cultivate the sense of togetherness necessary to perceive ourselves as one since then.
The forces that are tearing us apart right now are too great. We must embrace the concept of a united nation and lessen the differences along ethnic and geographical lines.
“Our loyalty to our ethnic groups is greater than our loyalty to the country.” Currently, Nigeria is a conglomeration of minor ethnic groups, each of which puts its own interests first. The gaps between these groups have only widened over time.
