Itse Sagay, SAN, a former chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), has disclosed that setting up a system would stop Nigerian governors from mistreating state police.
As a reminder, President Bola Tinubu recently instructed the Senate to start discussing a constitutional amendment that would allow state police in order to boost the battle against insecurity.
State governors who try to misuse the state police will face harsh criticism from Nigerians and civil society organizations, Sagay clarified in an interview on Friday on ARISE Television.
Governors who misuse their authority under the state police system risk being exposed, humiliated, and even prosecuted, according to Sagay.
He stated that the state governor should have ultimate authority over the state police. Being the state’s chief security officer necessitates that.
Nigerian civil society is now so powerful, in my opinion, that any misuse of authority by state governors will be fiercely opposed.
“I have absolutely no concern about that. Given the character of Nigerian politics, I anticipate some abuse, but I believe it is preventable.
“If they misuse the authority granted to them by the state police system, they may be exposed, humiliated, and prosecuted.”
