The Muslim Public Affairs Center, or MPAC, has denounced what it called foreign meddling in Iran’s domestic affairs and issued a warning that such meddling could worsen tensions and jeopardize the Iranian people’s right to self-determination.
The group stated in a statement released on Thursday that it supported Iranians participating in nonviolent protests after years of economic suffering, which it mostly blamed on US sanctions against Iran. According to MPAC, the country’s general poverty and misery have been exacerbated by the sanctions.
Additionally, the group warned that both Israel and the United States were attempting to take advantage of the upheaval for geopolitical gain and accused Israel of engaging in clandestine activities that it claimed had further destabilized Iran.
According to MPAC, “there is evidence that foreign agents have infiltrated protests to hijack legitimate grievances and provoke violence.”
MPAC denounced remarks made by the U.S. President endorsing protest actions in Iran, citing claims made by Iranian authorities that some demonstrators had attacked law enforcement officers and civilians, resulting in deaths. They argued that such remarks could put innocent lives in danger.
The group noted that protests against systemic racism and police brutality in the United States have been met with force, including the use of tear gas, rubber bullets, and, in certain cases, live ammunition. They compared the U.S. approach to Iran with its handling of domestic discontent.
The statement also mentioned instances in Minneapolis and other American cities where demonstrations against immigration enforcement and police behavior were violently broken up, leading to fatalities and injuries. Additionally, MPAC cited rallies in Israel that it claimed were met with restrictions on free speech and public assembly as well as government crackdowns.
MPAC questioned the intentions of Washington and Tel Aviv, claiming that their efforts toward Iran were motivated by an effort to destabilize a longstanding enemy rather than by concern for the welfare of the Iranian people.
Iran, like any other sovereign nation, has an obligation to defend itself against foreign meddling and sabotage, according to a statement signed by MPAC Executive Chairman Disu Kamor.
MPAC also denounced U.S. leaders’ threats of military action against Iran, cautioning that such actions could jeopardize regional and international security. It declared that the Iranian people will oppose attempts to weaken their sovereignty and called military escalation “a recipe for disaster.”
MPAC called on the Iranian government to have productive conversations with opposition parties and warned Iranians to be cautious of foreign meddling, drawing comparisons with Iraq and Libya.
The organization declared that “the only viable path to resolving Iran’s challenges remained a peaceful, internally driven process.”
