Thirteen people have allegedly died and over 236 others have been hospitalized as a result of a cholera outbreak that has spread throughout six Niger State local government areas.
In Shiroro LGA, the epidemic was initially discovered on Sunday. Since then, it has quickly spread to the local councils of Bosso, Minna, Magama, Bida, and Munya, alarming the local population and forcing the state government to act quickly.
According to reports, the administration has implemented a multi-sectoral strategy to stop the spread of the waterborne illness. This was confirmed by Dr. Ibrahim Dangana, the state’s Commissioner for Primary Healthcare, who confirmed the development on Wednesday.
In order to slow the spread, Dangana stated, “We have established treatment and isolation centers and are also starting vigorous sensitization campaigns.”
As per his statement, the awareness campaign targets Islamic organizations, traditional rulers, and faith-based organizations like the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in all eight emirates of the state.
In the old wing of the Late Senator Idris Ibrahim Kuta Primary Healthcare Center on Old Airport Road in Minna, the government has opened an isolation center as part of its efforts to improve emergency response.
Dr. Dangana called Governor Umaru Bago’s mobilization of resources to combat the outbreak a “swift intervention.” Additionally, he expressed gratitude to the state’s collaborating donor agencies.
The Ministry of Tertiary Healthcare’s Director of Public Health, Dr. Ibrahim Idris, further echoed the commissioner’s statement, emphasizing that Shiroro, Bosso, and Minna continue to be the hardest-hit areas.

The epicentres with the highest transmission are currently the focus of our attention. All impacted LGAs are still monitoring and tracking cases, Idris was cited by Channels Television as saying.
The issue is still being constantly watched by health officials, and locals have been asked to practice good hygiene and report any suspected instances as soon as possible. Officials are also urging citizens to drink only clean, treated water and to refrain from open defecation.
Although there had been no additional reports of fatalities as of the time of writing, officials cautioned that if preventive measures are not closely followed, there is still a high chance of more casualties.
