The Lebanese militant group, Hezbollah, has confirmed the death of its secretary general, Hassan Nasrallah, in an Israeli airstrike.

Nasrallah, who led the group for 32 years, was killed in an airstrike on the southern suburbs of Beirut on Friday.

In a statement on Saturday, the group said its leader was killed with other members in what it described as a “treacherous Zionist strike” in the Lebanese capital.

“Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, Secretary General of Hezbollah, has joined his great, immortal martyr comrades whom he led for about 30 years,” Hezbollah said in a statement.

Israeli jets rained gunfire on Beirut throughout the night into Saturday in the most intense attacks on the Hezbollah stronghold since the group and Israel last went to war in 2006.

Dozens have been killed in the latest hostilities between the sworn enemies.
