Nnamdi Kanu is the leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and the house of representatives committee on the South East Development Commission (SEDC) has called for his release.
During the panel’s first meeting on Wednesday in the national assembly, committee chairman Chris Nkwonta made the proposal.
The committee and other well-meaning Nigerians urge the president to assist Nnamdi Kanu’s release as a start toward long-term peace and prosperity in the area, he said, citing security concerns in the area.
Asserting that the SEDC would “drive meaningful development” in the area, the committee chairman praised President Bola Tinubu for approving the legislation creating the SEDC.
The leader of IPOB was extradited from Kenya in June 2021 and has since been held by the Department of State Services (DSS).
He is presently being charged with terrorism.
Stakeholders in the southeast have been calling for Kanu’s release more and more.
Tinubu was petitioned to order Kanu’s release by 50 members of the House of Representatives in June 2024.

In the same month, Kanu’s release was urged by the Green Chamber’s minority caucus.
Governors who were part of the South-East Governors’ Forum decided to meet with Tinubu on July 2 in order to request the separatist leader’s release.
The release of the IPOB leader prompted a meeting between senators from the geographical region and Lateef Fagbemi, the federation’s attorney general and minister of justice, on July 3.
