Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president, commended his late wife Stella for playing a crucial part in getting him out of jail.
After being imprisoned by the government of General Sani Abacha, Obasanjo was eventually freed by the government of AbdulSalam Abubakar, which resulted in his election as president.
During his second term, Edo State’s Stella Obasanjo pushed for his release and was appointed First Lady prior to his passing.

In a recent reflection on his incarceration, former President Olusegun Obasanjo highlighted the crucial role his late wife, Stella, played in securing his release.

Obasanjo described how he was imprisoned under General Sani Abacha’s rule and accused of taking part in a coup. After Abacha’s death, which opened the door for his presidency, he was released under AbdulSalam Abubakar’s administration.
Born in Edo State, Stella Obasanjo was a strong supporter of his freedom and became First Lady until her tragic death during his second term.
The 87-year-old praised Stella’s unshakable commitment in his comments, writing, “My late wife went everywhere to ensure that I came out of prison alive.” She traveled to France, Vatican City, and other countries. When I was released from prison, I had everything. “No amount of honor would be too much for the role she played,” he continued.
“I had a woman who made tremendous contributions to my achievements in public life,” Obasanjo said, expressing his sincere gratitude for the honor bestowed upon Stella by the construction of a hospital.
He also praised Governor Godwin Obaseki for his capable leadership and commended his efforts to the hospital project. Additionally, he reflected on his work with former Governor John Odigie Oyegun, whom he considered to be an exceptional permanent secretary.
“You’re guaranteed first-class treatment for any ailment with this hospital,” he stated. “The governor’s elbows deserve more respect.” I can say that the governor got off to a good start and is doing well with this type of structure.
