In Kachia, Kaduna State, the Federal Government has disclosed how it was able to persuade Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of the Sokoto Diocese, to take on the position of Pro-Chancellor/Chairman of the Governing Council.
Dr. Tunji Alausa, the minister of education, reportedly provided the information at the Abuja principal officers’ and governing council inauguration.
Vice President Kashim Shettima was instrumental in recommending and convincing Bishop Kukah to accept the position, he clarified.
Recounting the Vice President’s involvement at the Ministry’s conference hall, Dr. Alausa said, “Bishop Kukah is very busy.” Bishop Kukah was the vice president’s nominee, and he was quite concerned that I would cause him a great deal of stress. According to the vice president, Bishop Kukah holds him in the highest regard.

“I am now delivering the Vice President’s remarks,” he added, quoting the vice president. I am highly respected by him. Each and every time I ask him to do something, he agrees. I’d want to invite him to become the Pro Chancellor. I shall beg him for the sake of the nation, for my own selfishness, even though I know he is already overburdened. And I’m confident he won’t refuse.
As Dr. Alausa explains, Bishop Kukah responded, “Yes, I will do it,” when Vice President Shettima reached out to him about the role.
Bishop Kukah’s decision to accept the position despite his many other obligations was praised by the Minister, who said it was a testament to his devotion to community service and education.
Among the notable attendees were Prof. Qurix Williams Barnabas, the university’s vice-chancellor, and General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defense Staff. According to General Musa, a native of Southern Kaduna’s Zangon Kataf Local Government Area, the Nigerian military would equip the university with strong security, guaranteeing a secure atmosphere for both employees and students.
