Morayo Afolabi Brown, a well-known media figure, has talked candidly about her surprising foray into the television industry and revealed that she had no intention of becoming a show host.
She reportedly revealed this during her speech at the Refire Conference, when she discussed her early hardships, professional failures, and eventual ascent in broadcasting.
Morayo clarified that her first intention was to operate in the background rather than in front of the camera.
She admitted that she struggled with stammering and doubted her ability to speak clearly.
She claims that the plan at the time was to find another anchor for the program, and she brought in Joy Isi Bewaji, who was then concentrating on writing and went on to become well-known for her work.
But right before the show was scheduled to premiere, things abruptly changed. The production team was put in a challenging situation when the designated host withdrew to concentrate on writing. Despite her anxieties and lack of confidence, Morayo was forced to host the program herself because she had little time to prepare.
According to her, that was the start of her career as a television host, and the program eventually became well-known.
She encountered another obstacle years later when she was fired from her job at Television Continental (TVC). She was disappointed by the choice, but she did not leave silently. She resisted and defended her work, emphasizing her contributions to the expansion of the platform.
She was brought back, albeit in a lesser capacity, after several days of uncertainty. She kept working on her presentation and stayed dedicated to her profession in spite of the setback.
Although Morayo resigned from her position at TVC in 2019, she remained a contract employee of the channel and continued to oversee her program. She eventually landed a leadership position as a Managing Director by 2023, which she initially considered to be a career turning point. She claimed that the job did not provide her with the sense of fulfillment she had anticipated, nevertheless.
Her pivotal moment occurred when she created a fresh television program and presented it to a possible partner, who funded it with 100 million naira via her business. She was prompted to take a risk by this moment, which caused her to consider her journey.
In the end, she made the decision to quit her job and concentrate on starting her own business. Her own program, The Morayo Show, was born out of that choice.
“I was frustrated and had to fight for my job when TVC fired me a few years later,” she stated. I was demoted when I was recruited again five days later.
