Onyekachi Nwaebonyi, the Senate’s Deputy Chief Whip, has declared that he will submit former Minister Obiageli Ezekwesili to the Igbo traditional authorities.
Senator Onyekachi and former Education Minister Ezekwesili reportedly got into a heated argument during the Senate Committee on Ethics meeting, which was organized to consider a sexual harassment complaint against Senate President Godswill Akpabio made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Onyekachi claimed that Ezekwesili had called him a hooligan in an interview with AIT on Monday. The senator from Ebonyi North declared that he has supported women’s rights and empowerment and that he respects women.

“I can’t talk to my wife like that in public as a person,” he said. In public, I can’t have that conversation with my driver. Never in my life can I speak to a woman in such manner. In my entire life, I have never done that. I hold ladies in high regard. One of the people who has been fighting for women’s rights and benefits is myself.

Since my father had no male children, I have won numerous lawsuits as a lawyer on behalf of women who were not allowed to inherit their father’s property. Pro gratis, I have won a lot of cases. The facts are in. They can be seen if you visit Ebonyi State. One of the South East leaders that I work with is building homes for widows and funding their children’s education. I’ve got more than 300. These all serve to demonstrate my love, respect, and admiration for women.

However, it is unacceptable for a woman to publicly urge me to stop talking and label me a hooligan, a red-cap chief in Igbo land who has left their mark, contributed, and run for office. I was elected to the Senate by a vote of more than 500 people, and yet someone who has never been elected to a ward councilor came to my office, told me to stop talking, and called me a hooligan. It is not acceptable. And since it never occurred, I will bring that up with the Igbo traditional leadership.
