Chekwas Okorie, the founder of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, has said that Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, the first President of Nigeria, is not the cause of the travails of Ndigbo in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic.

He was responding to a question from two former Commissioners from Imo State, who paid him a visit last week to inquire about the preparations for the forthcoming Igbo Agenda Dialogue.

He noted that “Those who lament that the great Zik did not play robust regional politics like his contemporaries, Chief Obafemi and Alhaji Ahmadu Bello, do not understand Zik’s role in the development of politics in Nigeria and Africa,” he said.

Okorie, who is the Convener of the Igbo Agenda Dialogue told Prof. Vitalis Orikaeze Ajumbe and his former colleague that while Awolowo and Ahmadu Bello set out primarily to develop their regions as part of the overall development of Nigeria, Zik brought Dr M. I. Okpara to play the same role.

“Zik was a world figure who mentored young leaders across Africa and inspired them to seek freedom from colonial masters. These interventions by Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe led to independence of some African countries. He could not have played the role of Okpara, who in any case, showed a high level of competence. Okpara did a fantastic job in the development of the defunct Eastern Region. His legacies are littered everywhere as testimonial,” he added.

Okorie stated that Zik’s towering image was the reason he dominated political parties founded by others.

“Zik did not found NCNC. Herbert McCauley founded the party and made Zik General Secretary. Upon his death, Zik became the leader of the party. Same way he joined NPP and became the presidential flag bearer during the Second Republic. We must continue to show gratitude to Zik for showing the way to our people,” he explained.

Chekwas Okorie stated emphatically that it has become very necessary for Ndigbo to approach the 2027 elections and beyond as a united people who must regain their prominent position in the Nigerian political project. Hence the Igbo Agenda Dialogue is set to midwife the return of Ndigbo to political prominence.

The Igbo Agenda Dialogue holds at Chelsea Hotel, Abuja on Wednesday, 27th August, 2025..
