The ongoing detention of Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, has been denounced by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a breach of basic human rights.

El-Rufai has been detained by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) for more than 30 days without official charges, according to a statement released by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi.

The party accused officials of trying to force the former governor to renounce his political associations and called the imprisonment unlawful and unconstitutional.

It demanded that the ICPC either arraign El-Rufai in court or free him right away.

The declaration declared, “Detaining a citizen indefinitely is the hallmark of dictatorship and has no place in a democracy.”

The ADC claims that the right to liberty, a fair trial, and political participation are among the fundamental constitutional rights that are compromised by the ongoing detention without arraignment.

El-Rufai has allegedly been detained under circumstances that limit him access to his family and healthcare.

It went on to say that his incarceration was being utilized as a means of stifling political engagement.

“This isn’t the police.” According to the party, “this is the weaponization of state institutions against political participation.”

If the matter is not resolved, the ADC threatened to petition Amnesty International and other international human rights organizations.

It said that what it called “selective justice” and “power abuse” were undermining Nigeria’s democratic ideals.

Additionally, the party urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to show his dedication to upholding the law.

It urged pertinent state actors to abide by constitutional obligations, especially the ICPC leadership and National Security Advisor Nuhu Ribadu.

The ADC claims that organizations such as the ICPC were created to combat corruption, not for political ends.

The party maintained that El-Rufai’s release or his arraignment before a court of competent jurisdiction are the two legal choices.

“We demand that Mallam Nasir El-Rufai be released right away or that he be arraigned in a court of competent jurisdiction right away. Not a little more. Nothing less, the declaration stated.

The ADC warned that if democratic values are not upheld, the deterioration of rights may worsen and encouraged Nigerians to protect them.

It further stated that maintaining Nigeria’s democracy depends on protecting constitutional rights.
