Rotimi Oyekanmi, the former chief press secretary to Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the former chair of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has refuted rumors that INEC employees sang a “funeral song” as Yakubu bowed out of office on Tuesday.
As stated in several media outlets, Oyekanmi, who left with his principal, maintained that the gesture was a sign of respect and affection rather than a dirge.
In a statement released in Abuja on Thursday, Oyekanmi claimed, “The obvious display of affection and respect that the grateful INEC employees gave to the departing former INEC Chairman, Yakubu, as he walked to his car yesterday is now being purposefully misconstrued and misrepresented as a ‘funeral song.'”
Sahara Reporters was expressly accused by the former CPS of misleading the public, characterizing the piece as a purposeful effort to damage Yakubu’s reputation.
“This intentional piece of misinformation can only be created by a group of haters posing as journalists at Sahara Reporters,” he stated. However, they have not succeeded and will not succeed.
According to Oyekanmi, INEC employees openly complimented Yakubu’s policies and welfare programs during his ten-year term, demonstrating their appreciation for him on a regular basis.
He claims that under Yakubu’s leadership, revolutionary policies were implemented, leading to increase possibilities for capacity building, better allowances, and staff promotions.
“Most of the INEC staff publicly discussed Yakubu’s transformative policies, which over the past decade have resulted in promotions for both senior and junior staff, increased allowances, and capacity development initiatives,” he stated, in contrast to the false story.
According to the departing spokesperson, calumny campaigns are being pursued through the misuse of journalists.
He issued a warning: “Journalism is about facts, accuracy, and truthfulness; it is not a platform that can be abused by pseudo-journalists to launch a campaign of defamation against individuals.”
The administration of Sahara Reporters should warn anyone who uses its platform to disseminate false information about people, organizations, or events because doing so will harm the newspaper’s image over time.

The most senior National Commissioner, May Agbamuche-Mbu, was officially given INEC leadership by Yakubu on Tuesday. She will act in this role until President Bola Tinubu appoints a permanent replacement.
