In order to present and discuss new electoral standards in advance of the 2027 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) called a meeting with political party leaders on Tuesday at its Abuja headquarters.
The meeting was attended by political party members, secretaries, and chairmen to discuss the suggested framework for conducting the polls.
The Labour Party (LP) was represented by Senator Nenadi Usman, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was represented by Abdulrahman Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu.
Presenting recently created electoral guidelines intended to direct the conduct of the 2027 elections was the main goal of the gathering.
The commission claims that the Electoral Act of 2026, which calls for changes to current electoral processes, made the study necessary.
According to the INEC Chairman, the revised rules comply with the new electoral law’s stipulations.
He pointed out that rather than depending on antiquated laws, political parties and other stakeholders must function within the changing electoral structure.
The commission also announced plans for the Continuous Voter Registration campaign as part of the election preparations.
According to INEC, pre-registration will start online on August 18, 2025, while in-person registration will start on August 25, 2025.
Eligible Nigerians will be able to update their voter information or register to vote through the exercise.
Plans for a national voter registration revalidation exercise were also disclosed by the commission.
In order to improve the electoral roll’s integrity, INEC claims that the procedure will assist in eliminating duplicate entries and the names of deceased people.
In the meantime, discussions about electoral reforms are still going on, especially with regard to the provisions of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026.
The Senate’s stance on the real-time electronic transmission of election results to INEC’s Result Viewing webpage is one of the divisive topics.
Ahead to the 2027 elections, political activity is already picking up steam.
