The Joint Health Sector Unions and Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations (JOHESU/AHPA) on Saturday decried the prolonged abduction of a Registrar at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola.
Popoola was kidnapped alongside her husband by gunmen suspected to be bandits on December 27, 2023.
In a statement signed by its National Chairman, Kabir Minjibir and National Secretary, Martin Egbanubi, the union lamented that the incident highlighted the vulnerability of healthcare workers across the country.
It stressed that the persistent kidnappings undermined healthcare delivery to the citizens.
JOHESU/AHPA described the trend as “dangerous” and demanded emergency action from security agencies.
The union expressed solidarity with the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) on their seven-day warning strike which commenced on August 26 in response to the abduction of their colleague.
It urged the Federal Government and state authorities to mobilise security agencies to secure the release of Popoola and other persons held hostage by criminals across the country.
