Goodluck Jonathan, the former president of Nigeria, has described the stress he experienced as vice president in the Presidential Villa.
In an interview with the Rainbow Book Club, Jonathan discussed his memoir “My Transition Hours” and described what happened between him and several Northerners during the illness of his former boss, Umar Yar’Adua.
He claimed there were plots to remove him from the Villa so the South wouldn’t have a chance to succeed Yar’Adua.
The former Nigerian leader claims that tensions in the nation at the time resulted from the “North-South, Christian-Muslim divide.” He said, “I was hearing about a coup every day.”
He disclosed that several people had persuaded Yar’Adua to leave the Presidential Villa for his own safety while he was abroad because to his worsening health.
Jonathan claimed that he ignored the advise and chose to remain in the Presidential Villa, regardless of the consequences.

One day when I was still the vice president, some of my buddies arrived and said, ‘No, you don’t have to sleep here.’ They hadn’t even moved the Doctrine of Necessity yet. You must stay at my guest house and sleep there.
“No,” I replied. I’m going to remain at the State House. In order for Nigerians to know that I was slain in the State House, it would be preferable if someone wanted to kill me to do so there. They are aware that I haven’t done anything wrong,” he stated.
