The Kaduna State Government has requested that all public officials and political appointees who want to run in the general elections of 2027 resign from their jobs by March 23, 2026.

According to reports, the decision was made following the Independent National Electoral Commission’s publication of an updated election schedule.

The National Assembly and presidential elections are scheduled on January 16, 2027, according to the electoral body’s updated calendar.

February 6, 2027, has been set aside for the elections of state governors and members of state assemblies.

In order to prepare for the general elections, the schedule also indicates that political parties will start holding their primaries on April 23, 2026.

Abdulqadir Muazu Meyere, the Secretary to the State Government, stated that the decision was made to make sure candidates for political office adhere to the electoral regulations.

He clarified that public office holders must resign from their jobs prior to the start of party primary if they plan to run for elective office.

Therefore, in order to prevent any violations of election regulations, the state administration requested that the impacted officials submit their resignations prior to the specified time.

In light of the aforementioned, I would like to inform any political appointees and other government personnel who wish to run for elected office that party primaries are scheduled to begin on April 23, 2026.

Accordingly, this circular advises all such officials and appointees to step down from their positions by March 23, 2026. In part, the statement stated, “This is to enable prospective contestants to fulfill the one-month requirement that they resign from office before seeking for elective positions.”
