Following the kidnapping of 25 schoolgirls from Government Comprehensive Girls Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris has criticized the military’s handling of insecurity and called for an immediate change in approach.
Speaking on Monday in front of the House of Representatives Speaker, Hon. At Birnin Kebbi’s Government House, Tajudeen Abbas, the governor reiterated his need for a thorough investigation of the military personnel’s departure from the school just prior to the bandits’ attack.
“How can over 500 bandits be riding bikes on our highways without being checked?” he said. Our responsibilities to the security authorities are being fulfilled. We supply them with logistics and have purchased more than 100 cars for them, but their security system is broken.
The governor also stated that if the state had anticipated the troop pullout, it would have closed the school rather than depending on military deployment.
“We wouldn’t have followed their advice to deploy security personnel if we knew they would leave our girls for the bandits to take away,” he added. We would have just shut down the institution.
Idris raised concerns that certain people were purposefully undermining security initiatives.
“I think some enemies are working to truncate this government and the federal government; and the House must do something, especially about the lingering security situation in the country,” he stated.
“Yesterday it was Kebbi, today it is Niger and Kwara; who knows who is next,” he said, cautioning that danger was spreading quickly across states. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that this insecurity is addressed.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas had earlier stated that he led a group of MPs to express sympathy to the Kebbi State government and people regarding the kidnapping and murder of the school’s watchman and vice principal.
Abbas encouraged Governor Idris to honor the vice principal for his valor and gave ₦30 million to the families of the deceased school personnel.
“We are with you and we will continue to find a way to secure the girls,” he declared.
