Following a significant financial intervention by the Taraba State government, the ongoing issue at Taraba State University (TSU), which prompted academic staff to go on an indefinite industrial strike, may soon be resolved.
The state governor, Agbu Kefas, personally visited the university campus in Jalingo, the state capital, on Thursday to announce the approval of N3 billion to settle outstanding entitlements owing to staff unions. This development became apparent.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, or ASUU, chapter of the school has been on strike for a long time, and the intervention is largely regarded as a critical step in ending that strike.
The governor authorized the N200 million settlement’s immediate release while speaking to members of the university community. Additionally, he approved N100 million in monthly payments starting in April. He stated that these payments would continue until the total arrears were paid.
In the presence of union leaders, including ASUU Chairman Dr. Mbave Joshua Garba, Kefa, the university’s visitor, was seen to have also signed documents approving the disbursement of the monies in a symbolic display of commitment to the deal.
After months of disruption due to the industrial action, members of the university community have welcomed the intervention and described it as a positive step toward resuming regular academic activity.
A congress meeting has been called by the university unions’ Joint Action Committee (JAC) to discuss the government’s proposal.
In order to allow lectures and other academic activities to resume, observers anticipate that the unions will think about halting the strike.
Nonetheless, other lecturers pointed out that the congress’s decision will ultimately determine the outcome.
