The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is currently the main opposition party in Nigeria, according to attorney Kenneth Okonkwo, who believes that more lawmakers would soon join the party.
Nine senators have defected to the ADC, creating a significant minority in the National Assembly, according to earlier reports.
In response, Okonkwo emphasized in a Friday morning brief on Channels TV that the ADC does not depend on government authority or resources to draw in new members.
He claims that a group of opposition leaders looking to take on the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is what is driving the party’s increasing popularity.
“We are not APC; we lack the money and authority to contribute. Since we are not the governing authority, it is not even within our grasp,” he stated.
But he maintained that the ADC has become the nation’s most effective opposition platform, even if it does not hold federal power.
“The African Democratic Congress, or ADC, is actually the main opposition party right now,” Okonkwo said.
The attorney stated that in order to successfully oppose the ruling party, he had previously counseled opposition leaders from groups like the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) to band together.
“PDP, LP, and other parties are not sustainable, as I have stated for a long time. He stated, “It would be beneficial for the opposition leaders and parties to form a coalition.”
He claimed that in the end, the alliance decided to use the ADC as a political platform to further what he called the goal of a new Nigeria.
“They were able to deal with the APC, which has established itself as an enemy of democracy and undoubtedly an enemy of the welfare of the people, when they united,” Okonkwo continued.
He went on to say that as the political environment continues to change in anticipation of next elections, more lawmakers will soon join the party.
“By God’s grace, the APC will soon be history, and you will see more politicians joining us soon,” he declared.
