Following his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri’s seat should be declared vacant by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), according to Nollywood actor and African Democratic Congress chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo.
Along with members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Governor Diri reportedly announced his resignation from the PDP on Wednesday, raising the possibility that he might join the ruling All Progressives Congress, or APC.
In response to the news, Okonkwo said on Instagram that Diri’s resignation from his party and his continued lack of affiliation with any political party meant that he had officially lost his job as governor.
He referenced the 1999 Constitution’s Section 177(c) (as modified), which stipulates that an individual can only be elected to the governorship if they are “a member of a political party and is sponsored by that political party.”
“Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State resigned from the PDP and is not affiliated with any party, thereby vacating his seat as governor,” Okonkwo said.
“Every elected person is required by law to be a member of a political party. An elected politician cannot be partyless at any time, but they are free to switch parties. Therefore, I urge INEC to hold a new election in Bayelsa State within the next ninety days and proclaim his seat vacant right now.
