Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and a former governor of Kano State, is apparently thinking about joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as opposition leaders reposition in anticipation of the 2027 national elections.
Kwankwaso is reportedly in talks with ADC to establish an alliance with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, according to local Kano newspapers.
The negotiations take place in the midst of indications that a large portion of Kwankwaso’s Kano political apparatus is shifting in favor of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that is purportedly including his devoted fans, members of the Kwankwasiyya movement.
According to reports, talks are still going on despite the anticipated defection of Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf to the APC, which is thought to have strained relations within the Kwankwasiyya camp.
Habib Hisham, a former NNPP leader who has now joined the ADC, stated that the party is willing to accept Kwankwaso in Kano. He went on to say that the 2027 polls will be greatly influenced by such a combination.
