Rabiu Kwankwaso, a former Kano State governor, and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) are now considering their political options. They may choose to join the opposition alliance led by Atiku Abubakar or the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to a trustworthy source who talked to Punch on condition of anonymity, Kwankwaso and the NNPP would not run separately in the 2027 elections, unlike in 2023.
I can confirm that, unlike in the 2023 elections, Kwankwaso and the NNPP would not run as independent candidates. They are considering joining President Tinubu’s APC or joining the coalition led by Atiku, el-Rufai, and others in light of the current political climate,” the insider revealed.
The event occurs in the midst of a quickly changing political landscape as different political parties and individuals look to form strategic partnerships in front of the upcoming general election.
In an interview with Punch, NNPP National Publicity Secretary Ladipo Johnson responded to mounting rumors by confirming that the party was in fact taking these strategic choices into consideration.
“So far, I’ll say this: in the NNPP, we tend to wait until midterm, at least from our own history as the Kwankwasiyya movement,” he said. The midterm for this administration is set on May 29. Two years will have passed, and two years remain. We think that genuine politicking will start at that point.

Therefore, it is true that we are and have been communicating. But as you remember, I told you at the time that I didn’t want to name the movements, people, or groups that are talking to us. That’s still the case today.
As you may remember, numerous articles in newspapers and online have implied that Senator Kwankwaso is joining the APC, that it will happen soon, and other such things. That’s just how the game works. Some people are promoting that narrative out of self-interest.
In the end, though, they will start hearing from us pretty shortly. We shall communicate our actions to our fans. There are essentially three options: we either stay in the NNPP and stick with the people who supported us all the way through, we establish a coalition with Atiku and others, or we join forces with the ruling party. I’m not claiming that any of these are true at this time. However, these are the three main possibilities.
