President Bola Tinubu has been urged by Rabiu Kwankwaso, the New Nigeria People’s Party’s (NNPP) 2023 presidential candidate, to follow in the footsteps of former presidents Obasanjo and Jonathan and remove the contentious Tax Reform Bill from the National Assembly for the benefit of the country.
In the sake of Nigerians, Kwankwaso stated, “You should reevaluate your steadfast position on the Tax Reform Bills so that the country will finally get out of it.”
“Just as former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan withdrew some important bills for the benefit of Nigerians, Tinubu should reevaluate his position on the Bill for the benefit of Nigeria,” Kwankwaso said in a Monday statement issued through his X handle.
“My stance on tax reform is that it is not appropriate to review VAT or impose any new taxes at this time,” Kwankwaso stated. Such actions would be misguided, especially in light of the economic difficulties that many Nigerians are currently undergoing.

“The government should put more effort into helping the people, especially during these difficult times, than it should into adding more financial obligations.
“I implore President Bola Tinubu to follow the advice of the National Economic Council and other reputable experts. The general welfare, not ego or personal interests, should be the guiding principle for making decisions.
The withdrawal of these bills is not unprecedented. I think the same strategy should be taken now, since both Presidents Obasanjo and Jonathan took similar decisions to withdraw important measures in the nation’s best interests during our democratic past.
“In conclusion, I humbly ask President Tinubu to reevaluate his position on these bills and make sure that the majority of Nigerians’ opinions are respected and heard throughout this process.”
