Online rumors claiming Nollywood star Olanrewaju James, better known by his stage name Baba Ijesha, was set free after being “cleared” by the Court of Appeal have been refuted by Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Lawal Pedro (SAN).
Pedro told reporters in Lagos on Sunday that the stories, which were first published by actor Yomi Fabiyi and then replicated online, were “false, misleading, and irresponsible.”
He claimed that the allegations could mislead the public and amounted to a misrepresentation of court documents.
Pedro stressed that the Court of Appeal did not clear Baba Ijesha of the sexual offenses for which he was found guilty in 2022, despite claims made on social media.
“Mr. Olanrewaju James was not cleared of the offenses of sexual assault and indecent treatment of a child,” he declared.
The explanation came after Fabiyi claimed that the appeal court had deemed the entire case a “charade,” according to the Attorney-General.
Pedro described the entire legal proceedings of the case on July 14, 2022: Baba Ijesha was found guilty by the Lagos State High Court of sexual assault and indecent treatment of a child based on events that took place in 2021. He was given consecutive sentences of three and five years.
June 28, 2024: The Court of Appeal affirmed the conviction and sentence for the 2021 sexual assault but overturned convictions for alleged offenses from 2013 to 2014.
May 29, 2025: The Supreme Court dismissed Baba Ijesha’s appeal due to his incapacity.
October 9, 2025: The Court of Appeal’s ruling was upheld after his request for permission to launch a further appeal was denied.
Pedro emphasized that the actor’s release was not the result of an acquittal, but rather of serving out his entire sentence.
He denounced Yomi Fabiyi and others who were disseminating the false information, cautioning that doing so may incite needless anxiety and confusion among the general public.
Citing Section 39 of the Lagos Criminal Law, he declared that the Office of the Attorney-General would not think twice about prosecuting the publication of false information meant to frighten the people.
He emphasized the state’s steadfast commitment to protecting children and properly enforcing criminal charges while urging the public to ignore the false reports.
Pedro reaffirmed Lagos’ commitment to protecting children and ensuring fair representation of court decisions.
He went on to say that no person or platform should disseminate unsubstantiated information in order to minimize crimes against minors.
