Mudashiru Obasa, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, was anticipated to return to office and then stand aside as part of an agreement to resolve the House’s leadership problem.
According to a source who talked with SaharaReporters, Obasa agreed to leave within a few days but then reneged on the contract, contradicting allegations made by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Many Assembly members were duped into believing that Obasa would quit after Meranda, unaware that it was a political ruse.
“As soon as he was re-elected as part of damage control, he adjourned indefinitely, obviously awaiting judgment in the case instituted to legitimise the illegalities,” a source told reporters.
Obasa allegedly pressuring the judiciary
The source further said that the besieged Speaker’s true intention was to influence the presiding judge overseeing his dismissal.
On March 7, a Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja deferred proceedings in the House’s leadership issue until Monday, March 10, 2025.
According to the source, “That explains why, despite the promise to withdraw the case, it continued.” They have already written the ruling, which invalidates the removal proceedings. The entire apparatus has been put in place to railroad the judge.”
According to the source, once the court rules in Obasa’s favor, he will ensure that no appeals are filed on behalf of the Assembly, and with Meranda out of the picture, it will appear as if Obasa was never ousted.

According to the source, “Upon giving the obviously wrong in law judgment, Obasa will direct no appeal on behalf of the Assembly while Meranda is already out of the way.” The implication is that he was never ousted, but Meranda was never Speaker.”
Furthermore, the expelled Clerk of the Assembly would be reinstalled, despite protests from colleagues who backed his removal.
According to the source, “The further consequence is that the expelled Clerk will also return, notwithstanding his colleagues’ objections, and no valid action would have removed him. Then the ‘Oga’ will have his way and revel. The decision cannot be changed unless there is a last-minute change of mind.”
After Meranda resigned, Obasa was re-elected as Speaker last Monday.
