The Lagos State House of Assembly has demanded that the state government take immediate action to alleviate the suffering of locals due to certain roads.
During a meeting chaired by Speaker Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, the MPs reportedly made the call.
Bola Ahmed Tinubu Road in Igbogbo-Baiyeku Local Council Development Area (LCDA) was specifically brought up by the lawmakers.
The Ministry of Works and Infrastructure should be instructed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to make sure that HITECH Construction Company starts working on it again, the House urged.
Additionally, they insisted that all pertinent organizations create a detailed strategy for finishing the project while guaranteeing sufficient protection for neighbors in the impacted area.
In order to expedite the completion of projects, the House’s resolution required contractors to get 60 to 70 percent of the total cost up front.
Speaker Meranda also instructed all of the members to gather names of roads that have been abandoned in their districts and submit them to the relevant ministry for prompt action.
The decision was in response to a “matter of urgent public importance” brought up by Aro Moshood, who expressed his disapproval of the difficulty that the abandoned road was causing the people of Ikorodu.
Since 2017, this road has been neglected and in a terrible condition. What was intended to be a source of solace for the populace has instead turned into a cause of anxiety, presenting significant socioeconomic and security issues, according to Moshood.
The member emphasized how the area’s terrible road conditions are linked to an increasing number of illegal activities, such as sexual assaults, accidents, and kidnappings.
Abiodun Ogunleye added that the construction of the road to the state will greatly increase economic activity in the region and emphasized its strategic importance in his contribution to the discussion.
Considering that the House had authorized funding for the project the year before, Lukmon Olumoh expressed his disapproval of the protracted hold-up in the road’s construction.
“The postponement of a road building project for more than seven years is disheartening. Last year, when I was a member of a group that examined current road improvements throughout the state, contractors said that one of the biggest obstacles was the volatile exchange rate.
Olumoh stated, “This House ought to ask the contractor in charge of the project to confirm if they were paid the money this Assembly authorized.”

The House’s Deputy Chief Whip, Sanni Okanlawon, urged the government to move swiftly. He also urged contractors and the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure to provide an explanation for the project’s continued unfinished status.
“The problem of abandoned road projects is not something to be taken lightly. Along with the contractors, I implore this House to call the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure to explain why these projects have halted,” he said.
A law requiring all administrations to finish projects started by their predecessors was introduced by Tobun Abiodun in order to avoid occurrences of unfinished projects.
Deputy Majority Leader Adedamola Kasunmu emphasized that the problem went beyond Ikorodu in his remarks about the challenge.
This issue extends beyond Ikorodu. It’s occurring all around the state. He stated that in order to get answers for these deserted highways, we must call in all pertinent agencies, including the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure.
Following lengthy discussions, the Assembly decided unanimously to call for the contractors and the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure to submit a thorough report on the state of abandoned road projects in Lagos State.
